Psychological effects of Music

Psychological effects of Music

Everyone listens to music. Some even listen to it every day. But, why, what makes us listen to so much music? What are its effects on the brain? Much research exists on the positive effects of music on the human brain, but there are also many incredible theories. Typically, no child is promised to become a genius if they are made to listen to Mozart from an early age.

Your brain on music

One thing is clear: we cannot describe in a single word the effects of music on our brain: it influences different elements through rhythm, melody, sound, or even harmonies. Music also helps to awaken emotions that were still buried in us. For example, we love to listen to sad music when we are sad.

Once the brainstem recognizes sounds that we appreciate, it injects us with dopamine and triggers our reward system: we, therefore, benefit from the music we listen to. This functioning is the same and is known for sexual activity or drug use… But it also works with rock music.

Each gender has its emotions

Musical genres can allow us to “describe” certain emotions. If we take the example of metal, we will agree that it is a genre that is more reminiscent of anger, and that is the very essence of this type of music. Conversely, songs composed in the minor are rather connoted as sad.

Listening to Music: a source of Well-being

Music plays a significant role in our mental health. Older people with dementia are often anxious and music can often help them relax. In the same way, one can help people with autism communicate with music. More generally, music is known to slow our heart rate, lower our blood pressure and even improve our immune system.

The music is unique

It almost immediately triggers a desire to move, to dance, to get active. A particular beat or rhythm can help to have a steady cadence or precise movements, but we can attribute these particular reflexes to having fun and enjoying the moment and that motivates us.

Why does music affect us?

Music helps us survive because it stimulates the formation of groups, and we are stronger in groups than individually. Typically, if you take a group of individuals who do not know each other, they will interact much more easily in making music together. The melody and the rhythm make people share, to connect. This is perhaps the best thing about music: it is not only good for you, but it allows you to meet other people: it is, in essence, stronger than you.

So, there are several benefits of listening to music. We will conclude one thing: it may be the answer to almost all our problems.

Music to Boost Creativity

Do you lack inspiration? Music is your muse! A study conducted by the University of Miami depicted the creative side that comes from a music-listening session.

The survey found that people who listen to music at work finish their tasks faster and more creatively. Scientists advise avoiding a particular musical style: pop or songs with lyrics that would rather hinder concentration. Opt for a safe bet: classical music or background music.

So, you can let yourself be guided by your emotions and let go. In dance, painting, or theatre, music can have positive effects on your creativity and thus enhance your talent.
